About

Merritt Farm is owned and operated by David & Stephanie Merritt, and their children Andrew (4) & Sadie (1).

The Merritt family has roots in south Giles County back to at least 1824. The history of the Merritt Farm on Dog Branch dates to 1923 when John McDaniel Merritt, a Minor Hill businessman, purchased the property as an investment. The farm passed down to his son, Adrian Merritt, who lived on Dog Branch until his death in 1993 at age 93. His son, John M. Merritt, who grew up on the Dog Branch farm before leaving for Army service in WW2, was the 3rd generation to own the farm. In the 1970s John also purchased a tract of the old Anthony farm nearby and lived in the antebellum Anthony home on Crooked Hill Road until his death in 2017. The farm properties passed to the 4th generation, brothers Tom (Dog Branch) and Mike (Anthony Place). Both brothers added additional acreage to the farms over the years.

David (Mike’s younger son) is the 5th generation Merritt to farm the property and proudly carries on the family tradition of beef cattle production. David is a Tennessee certified Master Beef Producer.

David and his brother Michael are also 3rd generation owners of Merritt Popcorn Company, a family business founded by their grandfather, John M. Merritt, in 1984. Merritt-Pop is available in select retail locations, and online at merrittpop.com, Amazon, and other channels.
